The next stop for Health Fair 2014 will be on Tuesday, September 30th, at First United Methodist Church of Shreveport.

The church is located at 500 Common Street at the head of Texas Street, in Hunter Building-Bain Hall. From 7:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m., the community can opt for flu vaccines along with the life-saving blood work that is the hallmark of Health Fair.

With flu season approaching, the Red Cross urges people to get vaccinated now to help prevent becoming ill from the flu. The CDC recommends that those six months of age and older receive a flu vaccine each year as the most important preventative step against flu viruses. It is also recommended that people take the vaccine when it comes into availability since it will ensure they are protected sooner. Those interested in getting a head start on flu season can obtain their flu shot at Red Cross Health Fair for $25.

Health Fair is held four times each year with the goal of saving lives by helping adults access information they need to focus on their health. “This event continues to be well-attended because the atmosphere is casual, friendly and non-clinical,” says American Red Cross Executive Director Reid Brau. “We are seeing a wider range of ages because of the public’s increasing awareness of health complications that can appear at basically any time.”

Services and prices include:
Flu Vaccinations - $25.00: Flu shots given on a first come, first served basis as available.

Multi-Chemistry, CBC, Lipid & Thyroid Profiles - $40.00: A test that evaluates cholesterol, blood sugar, lipid, liver and thyroid levels, among others.

Multi-Chemistry, CBC, Lipid & Thyroid Profiles with PSA - $50.00: This test is the same as the first test, except it includes a prostate cancer screen for men.

A fast of twelve hours is recommended prior to testing (water and prescription medications are okay), and a stamp or 49 cents is needed to receive the test results. Participants will receive their results by mail within a week and are encouraged to share those results with their physicians to address any areas of concern.

Health Fair 2014 is sponsored by NSU College of Nursing, Regional Urology, First United Methodist Church of Shreveport, Nexxion, Mutual of Omaha, Debra Doucet and American Red Cross Volunteers. The event is presented in cooperation with Clinical Pathology Laboratories.
