The Caddo Sheriff's Office is hosting an active shooter instructor class today in the MLK area.

Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training (ALERRT) at Texas State University is providing the training, which is going on this afternoon in the buildings that once housed Linear Leadership Academy.

The sheriff's office says more than 80,000 law enforcement officers across the nation have been trained in ALERRT operations and tactics to respond to active shooter situations. The training is delivered by veteran law enforcement SWAT specialists with proven experience in active shooter response and police training.

In March of 2013, the FBI announced that ALERRT is the national standard through which it is training its agents. Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma, North Carolina, Iowa, Alabama and South Carolina are among the first states to adopt the curriculum as their state standard in active shooter response.

Participants in the local class are from as far away as Vermont, but it will also include the U.S. Marshal'd Service in Dallas, National Defense Intelligence Agency, Shreveport Police Department, and sheriff's offices in Caddo, DeSoto and Jefferson.
